Description
"Counting from Thirteen" at 754 Congress St. in Portland, Maine is designed to make viewers question American history since the passage of the 13th Amendment. The 13 gray boxes by Daniel Minter represent the counted and uncounted Black bodies that have fallen to racism since the emancipation of slaves. The bottom mural by Ryan Adams reads “The rope they bear is long.” And is inspired by the poem Haunted Oak, by Paul Lawarence Dunbar.
