Trayvon Martin: Broken Dreams | Bringing Back Bowery
A portrait of Trayvon Martin in the artist's colorful style with an oversized head, long thin neck, and small shoulders and torso. Martin was a 17-year-old African-American from Miami Gardens, Florida, who was fatally shot in Sanford, Florida by George Zimmerman on February 26, 2012. He claimed that he shot Martin in self-defense and was not charged at the time. The police said there was no evidence to refute his claim of self-defense, and Florida's stand your ground law prohibited them from arresting or charging him. After national media focused on the incident, Zimmerman was eventually charged and tried, but a jury acquitted him of second-degree murder and manslaughter in July 2013.
The colorful portrait of Martin gives him pink skin and places him in the foreground of an outdoor landscape scene defined by mountains. To the bottom left of Martin's figure is text with his name. To the bottom right of Martin's figure is text that reads: "Broken Dreams, Broken Hearts always, Alone in this World..." The text fades away into the painting.
