Source A related resource from which the described resource is derived Students attending Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg painted a Black Lives Matter mural on a street on campus. This mural is located on the road in front of the University Commons at Eastern Mennonite University in Virginia. Celeste Thomas, who is the director of multicultural affairs at EMU and senior adviser for diversity and inclusion, was the main organizer of the mural. The idea for this project came to her after a COVID testing site closed a barbershop on campus. In conjunction with the university’s Black Student Alliance, they determined the school did need the COVID testing space, but at the same time, they wanted to speak out against racial injustice that has been an ongoing issue for many years in this country. The artists of this 114-foot-long mural consisted of 36 students at Eastern Mennonite University, whose initials are painted on the side. The mural was initially outlined in chalk during the week, but that same weekend was painted again using road paint to prevent fading, and the following Monday there was a dedication ceremony. This mural was sanctioned by the university. The Black Student Alliance and the university both acknowledge that racial injustice is something they do not support in any way. With the hope that their artwork will make a lasting impact, the university noted that this will be a permanent fixture at Eastern Mennonite. Source A related resource from which the described resource is derived This mural is known as the Black Voices Street Mural in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The mural, created by Elizabeth Schilling, features a pride flag, an American Indian Movement Flag, and a pan-African flag. It was painted in June 2020 by volunteers on a street outside of the OKC Police Department Headquarters. This was an unsanctioned mural, created through community engagement, which was organized by Brandon Riles, who describes its creation as being different than anything currently seen around the country. Riles explained that for them "to be able to do this in front of Oklahoma County and in front of the jailhouse, it makes a big statement because who else has done it?" The significance of the location is accompanied by the significance of the piece itself. While this mural speaks heavily to the Black Lives Matter movement, it aims to give voice and power to other communities as well. The purpose of the mural at its core is unity. It is meant to bring everyone together but is also meant to hold those in power accountable.  There did not seem to be other street murals in Oklahoma City, nor other Black Lives Matter murals in general. There were a series of protests in Oklahoma City after the murder of George Floyd. On May 30th, May 31st, June 6th, and June 12th, protesters gathered in support of the Black Lives Matter movement throughout the city. Two of these protests took place on the street where this mural was painted, with the June 12th protest ending at the Oklahoma City police headquarters to confront the police over the force’s use of violence against protesters during the May protests.  Most articles written about this mural were released before the mural was finished. Riles did outline the plans for the rest of the mural and stated that “It’s also going to say Black voices as well as the movement, and we’re going to have victims’ names and we’re going to have various communities’ flags out here, as well”. Each of the letters has a different design. Source A related resource from which the described resource is derived This mural can be found on the street near the Spartanburg City Hall on West Main Street in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This 240-foot-long mural depicts the phrase "BLACK LIVES MATTER”, with each letter designated to a different artist's creation. It is situated on the street facing the City Hall and the Spartanburg Police Department (Spartanburg Herald Journal, 2020). Sixteen total artists created this collective mural. The mural’s completion date was in 2020, each artist used their abilities to “shine some light on the inspiration behind their letter, and why being able to say Black Lives Matter is important for them, and for Spartanburg” (Chamber, 2022). The sixteen artists came together, and the piece was sanctioned with help from the City of Spartanburg and other key community organizations (Chamber, 2022). Each of the artists was not only given the creative space to articulate their letter in any way that they saw fit, but they were also allowed to express themselves in interviews and their comments were saved by the City of Spartanburg. Lucy Boland, who painted the letter “L” stated, “The love was thick, our community showed up, and the beautiful feeling of hope rang loud” (Chamber, 2022). Boland also explained that her design “came from a prayer. A Mother’s Prayer” (Chamber, 2022). Boland’s “L” has wings at the top. The wings were a way to express “the hope in tomorrow” as she stated (Chamber, 2022). This is just one example of an artist’s vision and reason for participation, along with their connection to the unjust killing of George Floyd. As of January 2022, the mural was still visible.
