The Fight For Justice Sustains You | Bringing Back Bowery
Mid-size pink squares, separated into an even white grid and marked randomly with vertical red lines, build the background of this piece. Yellow text shadows the light turquoise lettering outlined in black. The text reads: "There is no justice in America. But it is the fight for justice that sustains you. - Amiri Baraka.
Amiri Baraka was a playwright, novelist and poet that actively worked to bring the Black experience in America to life. Baraka's writings explored the anger of the Black community within the United States at the beginning of the Black Civil Rights Movement, using his writings as a weapon against racism. A widely polarizing figure, through his near fifty year career Baraka continued to be regarded as one of the most respected and widely published Black authors.
A small strip pulled off of the painting removes the paint to reveal the plywood underneath, on which small text reads: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. - MLK".

You Kill Us We Fight Back
Graffiti on the Goodwill store reading "You Kill Us We Fight Back." There is also a 12 with a line through it visible in this photograph. Other anti-cop graffiti was written on this wall.
This is located across the street (diagonally) from Gordon Parks High School and the walls may be seen in communication with one another. This area was heavily damaged on May 28. The graffiti on Goodwill was quickly buffed.
