It is located on Lakeside Park Road outside of the Gardens of Lake Merritt. It is the Bay Area's longest street mural and has been seen around the world. The mural was organized by the East Bay Queer Arts Center. The mural was produced by local artists and activists including Kin Folz, the founder of the East Bay Queer Arts Center. In June of 2020, more than 300 volunteers participated in its creation. Oakland native, Tory Teasley, explained "This is our live-out-loud creative experience, it's something that marks the stamp on what this city is truly about. It represents its communities, the diversity of people here." In September 2021, just over a year after the mural was created, a "Pride Mural Paint Party" was organized in order to help return the mural to its original state after it started to fade. The "Paint Party" took place during Oakland's Pride Month.

The party also focused on the significance of the people, occurrences, and spaces that have played an important role in LGBTQIA+ diversity, such as the Oakland Pride Parade and Festival, which had been canceled that year because of COVID-19. As well as recognizing the value of the people fighting for equality, equity, and justice, the party also focused on remembering the importance of the cultural history not only in Lake Merritt but all around the city. They highlighted marginalized communities and the ongoing challenges that individuals within those communities face on a daily basis. These difficulties are the reason why the mural still remains relevant today. David Xone Johnson, an ambassador of the Queer Arts Center said, "I'll be transparent: It's still extremely challenging. So we're coming together to acknowledge that and just take everything that we're dealing with collectively into one statement to say that we are here and matter." Beyond bringing attention to the LGBTQIA+ community as a whole, the mural also focuses on the many incarcerated people who are LGBTQIA+. Janetta Johnson, an executive director of the TGI (Transgender, Gender Variant, Intersex) Project, spoke of the need for incarcerated transgender individuals to have a community and resources (including housing opportunities) available to them once they are released from prison. "We are dedicating our lives to the people who have been silenced. We are working to make your voices heard."

The mural also gives a nod to the community with the inclusion of the words “Tiger Nation” and the logos of the City of Cleveland Heights and community group Safer Heights.]]> The Black Excellence Street Mural, located in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, was created on Sept. 26, 2020, by local artists Jimmy Hayden and Wayne Pollard, along with Heights Libraries board member Gabe Crenshaw in an effort to honor Black excellence in the city. The mural was painted on the parking lot of the Coventry PEACE Campus, at the intersection of Coventry and Euclid Heights Boulevard, a street corner and park that is significant to the local Black community. The mural was organized by the Heights Libraries and the FRIENDS board, who collaborated with local artists, to bring the vision of the mural to life. 

The mural has been met with a positive response from the community, with many taking to social media to express their appreciation for the artwork. It has been widely shared and has become a popular destination for those wishing to pay tribute to the mural, with many taking photos in front of it. The mural still stands representing black excellence, and it has not been vandalized but has been amended to include the names of people who lost their lives to police brutality or have etched their names in history through their achievements.  

The mural was created as a way to celebrate Black excellence to serve as a reminder of the strength of the Black community and to evoke feelings of joy and pride. It features portraits of Black celebrities such as Halle Berry and LeBron James and the names of people who died due to police brutality. The mural includes the words “Tiger Nation” and the logos of the City of Cleveland Heights and community group Safer Heights, and still stands representing the black excellence. It has become a place to pay homage to the lives of those who have been lost, while also celebrating the accomplishments of those who continue to make a lasting impact.

This 240-foot-long mural depicts the phrase "BLACK LIVES MATTER”, with each letter designated to a different artist's creation. It is situated on the street facing the City Hall and the Spartanburg Police Department (Spartanburg Herald Journal, 2020). Sixteen total artists created this collective mural. The mural’s completion date was in 2020, each artist used their abilities to “shine some light on the inspiration behind their letter, and why being able to say Black Lives Matter is important for them, and for Spartanburg” (Chamber, 2022). The sixteen artists came together, and the piece was sanctioned with help from the City of Spartanburg and other key community organizations (Chamber, 2022).  

Each of the artists was not only given the creative space to articulate their letter in any way that they saw fit, but they were also allowed to express themselves in interviews and their comments were saved by the City of Spartanburg. Lucy Boland, who painted the letter “L” stated, “The love was thick, our community showed up, and the beautiful feeling of hope rang loud” (Chamber, 2022). Boland also explained that her design “came from a prayer. A Mother’s Prayer” (Chamber, 2022). Boland’s “L” has wings at the top. The wings were a way to express “the hope in tomorrow” as she stated (Chamber, 2022). This is just one example of an artist’s vision and reason for participation, along with their connection to the unjust killing of George Floyd. 

As of January 2022, the mural was still visible.
